Uncover the Usambara Mountains on a 5-Day Hike

ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrival in Lushoto – Kisasa Waterfalls or Rest

Upon your arrival in Lushoto, a scenic town nestled in the Usambara Mountains, you’ll begin your adventure with a short walk (about 30 minutes to 1 hour) to Kisasa Waterfalls. The waterfalls offer a peaceful escape, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of water cascading over the rocks. This is the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of the natural surroundings. If you prefer a more relaxed start, you can also choose to rest at your accommodation in Lushoto for the day, preparing for the hiking challenges ahead. In the evening, enjoy the tranquility of the area, with a chance to experience local culture and cuisine.

Day 2: Magamba Nature Reserve and Coffee Tour

On your second day, you’ll visit the Magamba Nature Reserve, which is known for its lush, dense forest, ancient trees, and abundant wildlife. A hike through this reserve offers a chance to immerse yourself in nature, with opportunities to spot monkeys, various bird species, and enjoy the serenity of the environment. Afterward, you’ll take a guided coffee tour, where you’ll learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and preparation of coffee in the region. The tour will end with a chance to taste some freshly brewed local coffee, allowing you to savor the rich flavors of the region. In the evening, return to Lushoto for a restful night, enjoying the charm of the town and its local delicacies.

Day 3: Lushoto to Lukozi Village for Hike

On the third day, you’ll depart from Lushoto and begin your hike to Lukozi, a small village that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The hike takes you through picturesque farmlands and forests, providing glimpses of daily life in the rural areas. Upon reaching Bushbaby Homestay, you’ll be welcomed by the rustic charm of the eco-lodge, nestled amidst nature. Here, you can relax, take a short walk around the homestead, or simply enjoy the views of the mountains and valleys. The evening will be spent at the homestay, where you’ll savor a home-cooked meal made from locally sourced ingredients, offering a taste of the authentic flavors of the region.

Day 4: Lukozi to Rangwi Village

The fourth day takes you from Lukozi to Rangwi Village, a place rich in cultural heritage and set against the backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery. The hike is scenic, passing through tranquil forests and small villages, providing plenty of opportunities for interactions with the local community. Once you reach Rangwi, you’ll stay at Sisters Convent, a peaceful retreat that offers both a historical and serene atmosphere. The convent is a place of calm, allowing you to explore the local culture and traditions, and perhaps participate in some quiet reflection. After a restful night, you’ll enjoy dinner at the convent, prepared with fresh local ingredients.

Day 5: Rangwi to Mambo Village – Departure

On your final day, you’ll embark on the hike from Rangwi to Mambo Village, a place perched on the edge of the Usambara Mountains, offering spectacular views of the valleys below. This area is perfect for a last dose of awe-inspiring scenery before you leave the mountains. After a leisurely exploration of Mambo Village, where you can interact with the locals and take in the views, you’ll have time for lunch in the village. Depending on your travel schedule, you may head back to Lushoto for your onward journey, or if you prefer, extend your stay in Mambo Village. Either way, this marks the end of your Mount Usambara hiking adventure.
