Tsavo West National Park, part of the vast Tsavo ecosystem, is known for its dramatic landscapes, volcanic formations, and diverse wildlife. Covering approximately 9,065 square kilometers, it is one of Kenya's largest parks, offering an incredible mix of wildlife and scenic beauty. Location

Tsavo West is situated in southeastern Kenya, approximately 240 kilometers southeast of Nairobi and about 200 kilometers northwest of Mombasa. The park lies on the western side of the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and is bordered by Tsavo East National Park to the east. Tsavo West is accessible from several entry gates, including Mtito Andei Gate, Chyulu Gate, and the Maktau Gate.


Climate

The climate in Tsavo West is generally hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Like much of Kenya, Tsavo West experiences two main seasons:

  1. Dry Season: From June to October, with minimal rainfall. This is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources.
  2. Wet Season: From November to May, with the heaviest rains in April. While lush greenery appears during this season, some areas can become challenging to access after heavy rains.


How to Get In

  1. By Road: Tsavo West is accessible from Nairobi and Mombasa via the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. The main entry points are the Mtito Andei Gate for travelers from Nairobi and the Tsavo Gate or Maktau Gate for those coming from Mombasa.
  2. By Air: There are several airstrips within the park, such as the Kilaguni and Finch Hattons airstrips. Charter flights can be arranged from Nairobi's Wilson Airport or Mombasa’s Moi International Airport, making it easier for visitors to access the park quickly.


Key Attractions

  1. Mzima Springs: A series of natural springs that provide crystal-clear water and are home to hippos, crocodiles, and fish. Visitors can use an underwater viewing chamber to observe aquatic life up close.
  2. Shetani Lava Flow: A fascinating expanse of black lava created by volcanic activity, offering a striking contrast to the savanna. The Shetani Lava Flow is ideal for photography and exploring the unique geology of the area.
  3. Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: This sanctuary within the park is dedicated to protecting the endangered black rhino. It offers visitors a rare chance to see rhinos in a protected natural habitat.
